Have You Ever Felt Completely Alone?
One of the most difficult experiences we can face is feeling like we have nobody to talk to. I am not necessarily speaking about being physically alone. Some of the loneliest people in the world are surrounded by family, friends, colleagues, and even church communities. Yet despite all the people around them, they feel unseen, unheard, and uncertain about where to take the things weighing on their hearts.
Perhaps you have found yourself there before. Maybe you are there right now. You have questions you cannot seem to answer, burdens you do not know how to carry, or disappointments that feel too complicated to explain. You want someone to understand, but you are not sure who is safe. You do not want to burden others, and perhaps past experiences have taught you that not everyone knows how to handle what is happening in your heart. So, you keep going. You smile. You show up. You do what needs to be done. Yet deep inside, you long for someone you could simply talk to.
The beautiful thing about God is that He never intended for us to carry life’s burdens alone.
Jesus Understands
One of the greatest comforts we have as believers is knowing that Jesus understands every emotion, every struggle, and every challenge we face. Scripture tells us that He was tempted in every way, yet without sin. He experienced rejection. He experienced betrayal. He experienced misunderstanding. There were moments when even His closest disciples could not fully grasp what He was carrying.
When Jesus found Himself in the Garden of Gethsemane facing the greatest assignment of His earthly ministry, He asked His closest friends to pray with Him. Yet while He was wrestling in prayer, they fell asleep. Imagine that moment… The people closest to Him could not carry that burden with Him. Yet instead of turning inward, Jesus turned upward. He continued speaking to His Father.
There is a lesson for all of us in that.
The First Person We Should Talk To
When life becomes difficult, our natural instinct is often to look for a person. We want advice, encouragement, wisdom, or simply someone who will listen. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. God often uses people to strengthen us and walk with us through challenging seasons.
However, there is a reason Scripture continually points us back to prayer – prayer is simply a conversation with God. Exactly what you are longing for, is found in prayer, in conversation with Jesus. Before David spoke to people, he spoke to God. Before Hannah received her miracle, she poured out her heart before the Lord. Before Jesus faced the Cross, He spent time in prayer. He deeply experienced the emotions of the moment, yet He did not allow those emotions to lead Him… He is a Son of God, and He chose to be led by the Spirit of God.
Prayer is not the place we go when every other option has failed. Prayer is where we begin.
Sometimes we make prayer far more complicated than it needs to be. We think we need eloquent words or impressive spiritual language. Yet Psalm 62:8 encourages us to pour out our hearts before God. Not our polished version. Not the version we think sounds spiritual. Our actual heart.
God is not intimidated by your questions. He is not offended by your tears. He is not surprised by any fears. He already knows what is happening inside of you, and He invites you to bring it all to Him.
When God Feels Like the Only One Listening
There are seasons in life where God may genuinely be the only One who knows the full story. While that can feel painful, it can also become one of the greatest gifts in our spiritual journey.
Sometimes God allows us to discover the limitations of people so that we can experience the faithfulness of His presence. People are wonderful, but they are human. They get tired. They misunderstand. They do not always know what to say. They are not designed to carry the weight that only God can carry. And we need to have compassion on that, because we also don’t always know what to say… Sometimes it is just easier to ignore it altogether…
The Lord, however, never grows weary. He never becomes impatient. He never needs a break from listening to you. He never looks at the clock wondering when the conversation will end. He remains present, attentive, and deeply invested in every detail of your life.
What an incredible privilege that the Creator of Heaven and Earth invites us into continual conversation with Him.
Living Poetry on Fire
If you find yourself in a season where you feel like you have nobody to talk to, do not allow isolation to push you away from God. Let it draw you closer to Him. Open your Bible and read His promises aloud. Put on worship and spend time in His presence. Go for a walk and simply talk to Jesus as you would talk to a trusted friend.
You may discover that while you were searching for someone to understand you, Jesus was already there, waiting for you to bring everything to Him.
The Truth is that some of the deepest encounters we have with God happen in seasons where we feel most alone. Not because He has isolated us, but because He is teaching us that His presence is sufficient, His love is constant, and His voice is worth hearing above every other voice.
Be a Wildfire
While this message is for those who feel alone, it is also a reminder for all of us to look around. Every day we encounter people who are carrying burdens we know nothing about. The smiling cashier. The colleague who seems fine. The friend who has become unusually quiet. The person sitting a few rows away from us at church.
A simple conversation, a thoughtful message, or a genuine question could make all the difference.
One morning before work, I was standing in a queue in a convenience store. I was very hasty as I was about to be late for work. As I was waiting in the queue, I gently heard God’s voice in my spirit, saying “I need you to go and buy a gift for (a colleague’s name).” I remember bargaining, “I am going to be late,” “I can’t leave my place in the line now,” “What am I even supposed to buy??” But the conviction in my heart grew bigger and bigger..
So, I ran through the shop and looked for something to buy as a gift! I was running around all over the place. Eventually I got a packet of rusks and settled on that. Definitely not a great gift, but something? As I arrived at work, this specific colleague arrived at the exact time as I did. We never arrived at the same time. Yet, this morning we did. I told her “Listen, after the meeting, I just quickly want to pop by your office, I bought a little gift for you.” Her eyes teared up immediately.
After the meeting I went to deliver the rusks – feeling a bit inadequate, because perhaps she was expecting a nicer gift and that is why her eyes teared up. But she sat me down, in tears, and shared the following: “Marile, last night I told Jesus I cannot do this anymore. I do not want to live anymore. I had my whole plan to end things… And then I said to Him ‘Jesus, if You really see me, if You are really REAL and HERE, let someone buy me a gift tomorrow.’” God does not always work in these ways, but clearly, she was serious about taking her own life. The small pack of rusks had nothing to do with it. It was the fact that God heard her!
Her life changed from that moment on. She still lives passionately for Jesus, because nobody can take that encounter away from her. And here I am on the other side…wondering how I almost did not pay attention because “I was going to be late…”
May we never be those who ignore the voice of God because we think other things are more important, or we are pre-occupied with other things. A simple act of obedience could change a whole life. If I was disobedient that day, she might have gone through with it, and I would never have known I had anything to do with it, because I would have dismissed the thought the moment it came up.
Praise God for HIM!!! Every person we encounter every day is someone Jesus wants to touch. Be aware of His voice, listen for Him. Respond to even the smallest nudges – “You look beautiful today!” Not knowing that person cried out this morning “I just want someone to say I am beautiful!” God knows what every person we encounter needs, it doesn’t have to make sense to you, it has to make faith!
Let us be people who create safe places for others. Let us be people who listen well, love well, and point people back to Jesus. You may never fully know what someone is facing, but your kindness and obedience in the big and small could become the reminder they need that they are not alone.
Prayer
Jesus, thank You that I never have to walk through life alone. Thank You that You see every burden, every question, and every hidden tear. Help me bring my whole heart before You and trust You with the things I cannot carry myself. Teach me to hear Your voice above every other voice and help me become someone who notices and encourages those who may be struggling around me. I am Your vessel, use Me, Lord. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
