The waiting season

There are seasons where life feels suspended between promise and fulfilment. You know God spoke. You know He planted something deep within you. Yet instead of movement, there seems to be stillness. Instead of arrival, there is waiting…

And if we are honest, waiting can feel deeply uncomfortable. Not because we doubt God entirely, but because we sometimes struggle to understand what He is doing in the space between His promise and its manifestation.

Yet right in the beginning of creation, hidden inside a familiar verse, God reveals something profound about waiting.

In the Book of Genesis 1:9, Scripture says:

“Then God said, ‘Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear’; and it was so.”

At first glance, this simply sounds like waters moving into position. But the Hebrew language paints a richer picture. The word translated as “gathered together” carries the understanding of waiting together, being collected with expectation under instruction.

The waters waited.

Creation itself responded to the voice of God with obedience and expectation.

Think about that for a moment…

• The waters did not resist His instruction.
• They did not fear being forgotten.
• They did not question the purpose of the command.

Why?

Because creation understood something many of us still need to learn deeply in our hearts: if God speaks, His Word cannot return void. If He instructed the waters to wait, then purpose was already attached to the waiting. God never tells something to wait without already knowing what is coming next. And a few verses later, we see exactly why the waters waited…

Genesis 1:20 says:

“Then God said, ‘Let the waters abound with an abundance of living creatures…’”

The very waters that waited became the waters that teemed with life. Notice the mention of abundance twice in this short portion of Scripture. Life entered the waters, everything you can think of living in the sea today… All the interesting creatures, anemones, schools of fish, sea turtles, plankton – everything alive and living! And above that, the Word says it “abounded with an abundance!” That matters!

The wording is intentional. God did not simply say the waters would have life. He said they would “abound with an abundance.” This is overflowing language. Excessive language. Multiplication language. The Hebrew paints the picture of swarming, teeming, multiplying, bursting forth in fullness. Life upon life. Increase upon increase. What once looked still suddenly became overflowing with movement and fruitfulness.

And this is what makes the waiting so powerful.

The waters were not waiting for something small. They were waiting for abundance. God had multiplication in mind while the waters were simply obeying His instruction to wait.

Many people think waiting means reduction, loss, or limitation. But throughout Scripture, God often uses waiting as preparation for overflow. The waiting season stretches capacity. It deepens roots. It teaches trust. So that when life begins to flow, we are able to steward what He releases.

God does not think in scraps when He speaks purpose over your life. The same God who caused waters to abound with abundance is still able to bring fullness out of places that once looked empty, still, or delayed.

That changes everything.

The waiting was not emptiness.

– The waiting was preparation.

– The waiting was positioning.

– The waiting carried purpose long before the manifestation appeared.

And maybe that is where many hearts are today… Waiting for healing. Waiting for breakthrough. Waiting for restoration. Waiting for direction. Waiting for the promise God whispered years ago.

God does not view waiting the way many of us do.

We often treat waiting as proof that nothing is happening. God often uses waiting as the place where the deepest work is happening. Roots grow before fruit appears. Character forms before responsibility increases. Trust deepens before doors open.

The waters teach us that waiting on God is not passive existence. It is eager expectation anchored in the nature of the One who spoke. The waters remained where His Word positioned them because they trusted His instruction more than their present appearance.

Ask yourself this question honestly: If creation itself responds with such obedience to the voice of God, how much more should we?

Becoming Poetry on Fire – Living the Word

Waiting on God does not mean putting your life on hold emotionally, spiritually, or mentally. Biblical waiting is active trust. It is waking up every day believing God is still faithful even when you cannot yet see the full picture. It is remaining planted instead of running ahead trying to manufacture outcomes yourself. It is refusing to let disappointment rewrite what God already said.

Here are some practical ways we can live this out:

• Stay close to His Word even when emotions fluctuate. Truth must always lead louder than feelings.
• Guard your heart against hopelessness disguised as realism. Faith does not deny reality, but it refuses to give fear the final word.
• Continue stewarding what is already in your hands. Many people wait for the next assignment while neglecting present obedience. Read that again… If you are feeling like you are not moving, go back to God’s last instruction to you. Many times, you will find you have not been obedient yet. God still has a plan for you, but He is waiting on your obedience. Be obedient to His initial instruction, and you will see momentum build – not just any momentum – the God-kind of momentum! Unstoppable!
• Pray with expectation instead of survival. There is a difference between praying merely to cope and praying believing God is moving.
• Watch your language in waiting seasons. Do not speak as though God abandoned what He initiated. God has, and will never, abandon what He Himself initiated. Eagerly expect, in speech and action, that He will carry through what He started in you.
• Most importantly, renew your mind concerning waiting itself. Waiting is not God forgetting you. Waiting is not punishment. Waiting is not wasted time. If God asked you to wait, there is life connected to the waiting. The waters waited… and then they teemed with life, they abounded with abundance! Your dreams, vision, calling, healing, growth, and future can teem with life too when you remain surrendered to His process.

Scripture says in the Book of Philippians 1:6:

“He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion…”

God finishes what He starts. Always.

Be a Wildfire.

There are people around us who view waiting seasons as evidence of failure. Many are exhausted because they think delay means God said no.

This is where we become carriers of hope.

• Teach people that waiting on God is not passive frustration. It is expectant positioning.
• Disciple people through their process, not only to their breakthrough.
• Walk with people who are discouraged. Remind them of what God already spoke. Help them stay anchored when emotions become unreliable and start contradicting what God has spoken.
• Speak life over waiting seasons.

Parents can teach their children this. Leaders can model this. Friends can strengthen one another in this. Imagine what would happen if believers stopped treating waiting as abandonment and started treating it as preparation for life to emerge.

The waters waited together…

Perhaps we should too. Not with fear. Not with striving. Not assuming God forgot us. But with eager expectation. Knowing the God Who spoke is still faithful. Knowing the God Who started the work will complete it. Knowing that in His timing, what feels still today can suddenly teem with life tomorrow.
